About Course

This entry-level course is designed for individuals with little to no literacy skills in their native language. It emphasizes basic reading and writing skills with Scripture-based content.

What Will You Learn?

  • By the end of this course, learners should be able to:
  • Recognize and pronounce basic alphabets and sounds.
  • Read and write (optional) simple words and short sentences.
  • Read short Bible verses and understand basic meaning.
  • Develop confidence in transitioning from seeing words to reading written words.
  • Begin to participate in basic Scripture-based reading and discussion.

Course Content

Module 1: Introduction to Literacy and Faith
• Orientation & Icebreakers (Acts 2) • Introduction to the Bible as a source of learning • Lesson Themes: o The importance of reading and writing o God’s Word is for everyone (2 Timothy 3:16)

Module 2: Alphabet Mastery and Phonics
Focus: Recognition and sound association of letters (A–Z) in various dialects. • Lessons Include: o Uppercase and lowercase letters o Vowels and consonants o Introduction to basic phonics • Activities: o Letter tracing (visual and tactile) o Sound repetition exercises (audio) o Scripture Reading: Genesis 1:1, John 1:1 (focus on letter sounds)

Module 3: Word Formation and Recognition
Focus: Forming and recognizing simple, high-frequency words • Lessons Include: o Combining letters to form words (CVC patterns: cat, man, sun) o Sight words (e.g., God, love, man, day, light) • Activities: o Matching pictures to words o Bible Story Snippets: Creation story vocabulary o Scripture Reading: Psalm 23:1, John 3:16 (short word focus)

Module 4: Sentence Building and Understanding
Focus: Simple sentence construction and reading comprehension • Lessons Include: o Subject + Verb + Object structure o Basic punctuation • Activities: o Fill-in-the-blank exercises o Scripture reading circles: “Jesus wept” (John 11:35), “God is love” (1 John 4:8)

Module 5: Oral-to-Written Transitions
Focus: Translating spoken language into written form • Lessons Include: o Listening to stories and writing key words o Practicing dictation and copying • Activities: o Group storytelling and sentence writing o Oral retelling of short Bible stories (e.g., Parable of the Lost Sheep)

Module 6: Application and Review
Focus: Consolidation of skills, confidence building • Lessons Include: o Personal writing: “My favorite Bible verse” o Group reading and performance (e.g., Psalm 100 recitation) • Final Project: o Create a Scripture Verse Booklet using learned words and verses • Assessment: o Informal review through oral reading, writing samples, and participation
